Lydia is the timid, loving mother of Mylene. She and Mylene are close and have a better understanding of each other than Mylene's father. Lydia is married to Ramon Cruz, a daunting pastor at the Pentecostal Church in the South Bronx. Their relationship is complicated and they do not see eye-to-eye on how to raise their daughter. Lydia feels her family is breaking apart due to her husband's recent outbursts.
It is revealed that Lydia is in love with her husband's brother, Francisco and they form an affair behind Ramon's back. She admires Ezekiel, her daughter's boyfriend, and finds him talented and driven.
