The Get Down is an 11 episode musical drama series created by Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis. It was announced that the series was ordered by Netflix in early 2015, and it premiered on August 12, 2016, and the second half of the first season premiered on April 7, 2017. On May 24, 2017, Netflix canceled the show after one season.

The Get Down focuses on 1970s New York — broken down and beaten up, violent, cash-strapped — dying. Consigned to rubble, a rag-tag crew of South Bronx teenagers are nothings and nobodies with no one to shelter them — except each other, armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans. From Bronx tenements, to the SoHo art scene; from CBGBs to Studio 54 and even the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is a mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip-hop, punk, and disco — told through the lives and music of the South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world … forever.[1]

It was announced that Luhrmann would helm the first two episodes as well as the series finale. He will executive produce alongside Emmy nominee Shawn Ryan, and Academy Award winner Catherine Martin will serve as costume and production designer. She joins fellow executive producers Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, playwright Stephen Adley Guirgis, and Marney Hochman.
In April 2015, Netflix announced that T.J. Brown Jr., Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, and Skylan Brooks would be starring in the series.
